What is Geographic Information Science?

Geographic Information Science is a term that has been coined to describe the growing research field involving emerging technology that helps us to investigate features of the Earth's surface.

These technologies have improved our ability to collect, store, manage, analyze, and utilize this information.  This has affected nearly every aspect of our lives from digital maps in rental and delivery vehicles to regional and city planning.  The technologies used to facilitate these goals include geographic information systems (GIS), the global positioning system (GPS), and satellite and aircraft-based remote sensing systems.

These technologies allow us to manage the resources of our planet and understand the effects of our actions on our environment.  Geographic Information Science is helping us every day to understand our impact on the world around us.
