GIS Projects at the Department of Health promotion Sciences

In 1995, the Institute for Child Advocacy and the University of Oklahoma College of Public Health were awarded a two year planning grant from the Centers for Disease Control to develop a neighborhood-oriented adolescent pregnancy prevention project in Oklahoma City. As part of the planning process, the Department of Heath Promotion Sciences geo-coded Oklahoma birth certificates and assigned them to census blocks. Census blocks were then aggregated to the neighborhood level (census tracks and public school service areas) to provide information on adolescent birth rates at the neighborhood level. In addition to birth rate information, census data and other information was analyzed at the neighborhood level for use by neighborhood planning groups.

As a result of the planning process, the Institute for Child Advocacy and the College of Public Health were awarded a 5-year contract to implement the adolescent pregnancy prevention project in Oklahoma City. Data continues to be collected and analyzed at the neighborhood level. In addition, the College of Public Health will be conducting two waves of a survey of neighborhood residents in 5 Oklahoma City and 5 Tulsa neighborhoods to collect information on their perceptions of community, neighborhood, family, and individual assets, as well as problem behaviors among adolescents. The surveys will be conducted in 1997 and 2001.
